A
few things about the "bay". The water you'll be looking at
is called Taunton Bay, and it is tidal. The tide in this bay is limited
to about an 8' rise and fall, because the water enters the bay from
Frenchman's bay through a narrow neck called the reversing, or "tidal"
falls (just east of the bridge.)
The wildlife
common to this bay include fox, deer, gulls, cormorants and loons (they
spend much time swimming like ducks, and diving under water in search
of fish), great blue heron, eagles, and plovers. The plovers are a shore
bird, in the piper family, and perch in groups on the rocks, feeding
on the shoreline as the tide comes in, and are beautiful to watch as
they fly in flocks, seeming to disappear as they turn away, their brown
backs blending in with the shoreline, and reappear as the sunlight reflects
off their white breast feathers. Keep a lookout for the occasional curious
seal swimming in the cove, and the otter that lives across the cove.
Because
the bay is shallow, the cold ocean water floods over flats warmed by
the sun as the tide comes in. This gives us something rare in maine:
salt water swimming that is sometimes downright warm. (rainy days and
cloudy weather chill the bay right off.) The float out front is ours,
and thus yours to use and enjoy. We also have kayaks available!
